Best Time to Visit Aourir: A Month-by-Month Breakdown

Aourir is one of those rare places where "there's no bad time to visit" is actually true — but that doesn't mean every month is the same. The waves vary, the crowds come and go, the prices shift, and the weather — while always warm by European standards — has its own character through the year.

Here's everything you need to know to pick the right time for your trip.

The short answer

Best for surf: October to April Best for beginners / warm water: May to September Best for avoiding crowds: May–June and September–October Best value: June to August (lower demand, same sun)

Month by month

October

The start of the prime surf season. North Atlantic storms begin generating consistent swells that travel down to the Moroccan coast. The lineups are starting to fill but aren't yet at peak crowding. The weather is warm, water temperatures are around 21°C, and the light is extraordinary — that golden autumn quality that makes everything look slightly better than it is.

Swell: 3–4 ★ | Crowds: 2 ★ | Water temp: ~21°C

November

The season picks up. Swells are more frequent and powerful. Some of Aourir's best sessions happen in November — a good northwest groundswell at Anchor Point in November is as good as it gets. Air temperatures cool slightly (highs around 22°C) but it still feels warm. Lineups are active but manageable.

Swell: 4 ★ | Crowds: 3 ★ | Water temp: ~19°C

December & January

Peak surf season. The North Atlantic is pumping swells reliably. The best surfers in the lineup increase. This is when the wider Aourir and Agadir surf coast earns its reputation. Wetsuit required (3/2mm minimum). Lineups at Anchor and Hash Point fill early, especially on weekends.

It's also peak season for surf houses — book well in advance.

Swell: 5 ★ | Crowds: 4–5 ★ | Water temp: ~17°C

February & March

Surf is still excellent and the crowds often thin slightly as the European holiday period is over. This is arguably the sweet spot: consistent swells, manageable lineups, and the first hints of spring warmth. Almond trees bloom across the inland valleys.

Swell: 4–5 ★ | Crowds: 3 ★ | Water temp: ~17–18°C

April

The shoulder season begins. Swells become less consistent but still appear regularly. Water starts warming (18–19°C). This is a fantastic time for intermediate surfers and those combining work with surf — the season is quieting but the conditions are still excellent.

Swell: 3 ★ | Crowds: 2 ★ | Water temp: ~18°C

May & June

The ocean settles into its summer character. Smaller, friendlier waves. Perfect for beginners, longboarders, and those who want to focus on fundamentals without the intensity of big swells. Water is warming towards 20°C. The town is quieter than peak season, prices are lower, and you can often have spots to yourself.

Swell: 2 ★ | Crowds: 1–2 ★ | Water temp: ~20°C

July & August

Summer. Hot, dry, and the sea is at its warmest (22–23°C). Waves are small and often glassy in the morning. Local Moroccan tourism peaks, and the beaches around Agadir get busy, though Aourir village itself stays relatively contained. Evening temperature drops are dramatic — pack a light jacket.

If you're combining a surf introduction with cultural exploration (Agadir, Essaouira, the interior), summer works well.

Swell: 1–2 ★ | Crowds: 2 ★ | Water temp: ~22–23°C

September

Transition month. The swell starts returning. Some September swells are genuinely great. Water is still warm from summer. The village quiets after August but before the full winter crowd arrives. One of the most underrated months to visit.

Swell: 2–3 ★ | Crowds: 1–2 ★ | Water temp: ~22°C

What to pack (by season)

Oct–Apr: 3/2mm or 4/3mm wetsuit, light layers for evenings, waterproof jacket for occasional rain.

May–Sep: 2mm shorty or boardshorts/bikini in summer, light linen clothing, strong sunscreen.

Year-round: Reef shoes (helpful), reusable water bottle, mineral sunscreen (protects the reef), lip balm with SPF.

Ramadan

Ramadan dates shift each year. During Ramadan, some restaurants and cafés adjust their hours, and the atmosphere of the village changes — in a fascinating way, not a problematic one. Food is available; surf houses operate normally. It's worth being aware of and respectful of.

Our honest recommendation

If you can choose freely, we'd say: February, March, or October. You get excellent surf, reasonable prices, manageable crowds, and the kind of weather that makes Morocco feel like the discovery of a lifetime.

But truly — we've had guests leave each month of the year and call it their best trip. It depends what you're there for.
